THERE! I FIXED THE...SHOW? MINI - Doubling Down (South Park)
While I don't think South Park is as good as it was back in its prime, I still find it an entertaining and often hilarious show, from the recent Paramount+ movies and even some of the new episodes. It's not all perfect, like I don't know anyone who'd complain if they dropped Tegridy Farms, but it's still impressive how well the satire is played out in each satire. Even back in 2017, the twenty-first season had some fantastic moments at play, especially when they tied into Fractured But Whole. However, there's also the episode 'Doubling Down', which could've and should've been the season's most thought-provoking episode, but there was one massive problem that hindered the whole thing. So, how would I rectify it?
Let me explain in full detail: Doubling Down addresses the turmoil of an ongoing arc in the series at this point, the failing relationship between Cartman and Heidi, and this episode shows it at its boiling point, with Kyle stepping in to settle things, but inadvertently developing feelings for Heidi. What works about this episode is the love triangle, with Heidi having to choose between being manipulated by Cartman or actually being treated well by Kyle. It's some really great stuff...except for one thing. This episode would've been fantastic if the Garrison subplot just shut the hell up. It doesn’t sound like an issue, but when you boil it down, it doesn’t add anything. It’s just political satire for the sake of political satire. I’m not saying there isn’t a few laughs to be had, but when the rest of the episode is pretty compelling and then being constantly interrupted to tell the same “Garrison is just like Trump” joke they made over and over again in Season 20, the subplot feels more like a distraction. So, easy fix, we get rid of the subplot, done. But what B-story could fill in the gaps it left? I’m gonna be real, this isn’t really an episode that needs a B-plot. The plot it has with Cartman and Heidi’s relationship is already great, so why not dedicate that time to showing more of that? They can really expand on the love triangle aspect between them and Kyle, maybe even ending on a dour note with the two of them permanently breaking up due to Cartman’s lack of respect and empathy. Not to say this’ll change the status quo for Cartman, because….well, he’s Cartman. But the main point is, if you get rid of the needless Garrison plot, then consider this episode fixed.
